Do you know this person?
Shortly after the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day of 2018, you closed your eyes and vowed a resolution: sign up for a gym. go every day and lose the 15 pounds and reclaim your shape.
A few days, and a few inspirational Instagram posts, later, you found yourself at a local big-name gym, inking an annual contract. Sans the hidden fees, that worked out to a little under $35 per month — a steal, for 365 days of value.
But by early February, the commitment began to wane. “Every day” became every other day; every other day slipped to twice per week… once per week… zero times per week.
You are paying the “FAT TAX”
Finding time to focus on yourself and your health seems almost laughable during this crazy, fun and stressful time of year. But I’m here to challenge you to focus on your F.A.M.I.L.Y. and not only survive the holidays but laugh, smile and thrive.
FAMILY – the holidays are full of family. From your own family to the aunts, uncles, and cousins that you only see at Christmas time. Allow me to break up the repetitive traditions with a different look at FAMILY.
I admit I subscribe to the Dallas Morning News. It is delivered 7 days a week to my house.
I realize that a few of you will read that and think, “Isn’t Michael Tannery a tech kind of guy? What is he doing taking the newspaper?” Isn’t that Old School?
I know that many of the articles I read are available to me online, and it is not unusual for me to have read the articles before the paper actually arrives at my house.
Arrives is a loose term. As a former paperboy, (Entrepreneurial Training at age 12) I prided myself on “porching” the paper from my bicycle as I rode and delivered the paper daily. My paper makes it over the curb and sometimes to the sidewalk.
The idea of the teenage paper boy/girl has gone the way of the home telephone. Almost non-existent and the service could be on par with the decline of the subscription levels.

Life Changes – Thomas Rhett
Ain’t it funny how life changes
You wake up, ain’t nothing the same and life changes
You can’t stop it, just hop on the train and
You never know what’s gonna happen
You make your plans and you hear god laughing
Life changes and I wouldn’t change it for the world, the world, oh no
A lot happened in the last twelve months and I have no doubt that the next twelve months brings new opportunities for all of us.
A year ago, Tina and I had recently finished our first 70.3 Ironman and were researching how we could do two in 2019. Suddenly in a simple misstep, we were dealing with her broken heal and what that meant for our lives. We had plans!
God just laughed.
I have been practicing financial planning and tax planning for 3 decades. Today, there is a disease spreading like a flu outbreak at your local elementary school. I call the disease the “$100K and broke”. These people are college educated, with full-time jobs at companies that provide excellent benefits, Most are not contributing anything at all to their retirement and savings. How are they living from paycheck to paycheck and getting behind financially while making so much money?
I was reminded of this Aesop’s fable this week at Toastmasters. Kimberly Hardman presented a speech about The Grasshopper and the Ants. As I listened, I could not but think of the $100K and broke today as they live paycheck to paycheck.
